Get Thee Behind Me, Brain!!!
When I walked in, I immediately noticed the staleness of the air.
You know…when there is very little air circulation and the heat just stacks up.
Immediately, all I could think about were all the reasons I did NOT want to be there.
All the reasons why I could postpone this to another day…
Ever notice how our brains are really good at rationalizing away why we should not take action? I know I have decades of practice at that!
I walked over and stared at the treadmill in my garage and my brain is just yelling at me…
It’s hot.
I’m tired.
My legs are sore.
We can do this tomorrow.
What about your old injury!?
We run in the morning, not the afternoon!
You don’t like running on the treadmill!
You don’t have time for a run…
etc…etc…etc…
I often have a love hate relationship with my brain…
But I took another step.
Granted…it was a REALLY SMALL step.
But a step nonetheless.
I started the treadmill, and set the speed to slooooowwwww…basically walking fast.
But I started.
And the next time, I’ll have the same conversation with myself.
Because I know that I’ll never hit my running goals if I don’t actually run.
Without the running part, they are just pipe dreams.
It takes time to build up the endurance, strength, all of that.
But I know when I actually show up, even if it’s only at 10% effort, I will make progress.
And the progress will compound as time goes by.
The time is going to go by regardless, right?
The end of the year will be here before I know it. Why not spend a portion of my energy making progress toward my goal rather than just sitting in frustration…
As I write, there are 208 days left in the year.
They will become memories whether I take any action or not.
And it only takes a very small fraction of that time to make progress.
29 weeks left. 30 minutes 3x a week. That’s 14.5 hours.
14.5 hours to make real progress.
I remember what I heard former MMA fighter now business coach, Pat Precourt say…
The person who shows up 90% of the time with 10% effort will always outperform the person who shows up 10% of the time with 90% effort.
So I get on the treadmill again. Even if I can only give 10%.
It’s the same thing with buying apartments.
Even when you only have the 10%…you can show up. You can stay connected, you can focus on building the relationships you will need to close that first deal.
When your brain is yelling at you that you don’t have the time, energy, whatever…just remember that all you need is the 10% effort.
See you on the next call…
