Repetition Builds Mastery

There was nothing I could do but watch as my son fell. He hit the ground with a loud slap.

The good news? It wasn’t in a Waffle House parking lot…(IYKYK)

I was standing in the gym, watching him train in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

As I stood there, observing his training, I couldn’t help but reflect on the process.

At the beginning of class, the Sensei teaches a technique. Then the students pair up and practice it together — over and over. They switch partners and repeat the process, honing the technique through repetition.

Training in martial arts isn’t much different from anything else in life. The key to martial arts — and life — is consistent practice over time.

You can’t just read about a technique in a book and expect to use it effectively in the real world!

It takes repetition, practice, and more repetition. Over and over again until it’s ingrained in your subconscious and muscle memory.

Just like learning how to drive a manual transmission, it’s halting and bumpy when you first learn…and you get better and smoother as you keep working on it.

It’s the same in real estate.

Take underwriting, for example. Learning the skill isn’t enough.

To truly master it, you have to practice it repeatedly.

Over and over again.

And you become more and more fluent as your skill improves. You see numbers on a spreadsheet, and you recognize their significance immediately.

You see the connections faster, process the information quicker, and make decisions more confidently.

Through consistent repetition, running numbers becomes second nature.

One day, you realize you speak the language of underwriting fluently — not because you studied it once, but because you put in the reps.

You did the work.

It takes commitment to improve ANY skill.

And here’s a secret to building commitment…

Community.

Commitment grows in community…it dies in isolation.

Don’t let your commitment die. Reinforce it by getting into the room and connecting with others who are already doing what you want to do.

Build your commitment, build your real estate portfolio, build your life.

Don’t let isolation kill your dream.
