Snickers? Or Laffy Taffy? Or Ring Pop? Or Bubble Tape? Or…
Dad, I don’t know which one to choose…
Eleanor was standing at the counter of the oldest pharmacy in South Carolina.
Guerin’s pharmacy has had a soda counter and a candy section since I was little, the selection changing as candies come and go.
And my 6 year old daughter was standing there, trying to decide which candy she wanted as dessert after her hotdog and bag of chips.
Yes, I realize that there is little nutritional value in a meal of a hotdog, bag of chips, and candy…
Don’t worry, she had to have her carrots earlier in the day in order to be able to have the junk food supper with Dad.
Every month we go to downtown historic Summerville for Third Thursday, the monthly downtown event with live music, food trucks, all the things.
And every month, it’s the same routine.
Stuck at the candy counter deliberating between all the options available.
Trying to arrive at the point where a decision can be made.
But there are so many options to choose from!!!
Airheads, Lemon Heads, Heath Bar, Snickers, Candy Cigarettes (my old school favorite), M&Ms, and the list goes on and on.
It used to be, I would get frustrated with the time it took for her to decide which candy. I would be irritated that I had to help her talk through all the options available.
I mean, it’s just candy!
She’s not deciding where to go to college.
But then I remember that I’ve been in that same situation many times.
Not only with candy options…
But with so many decisions I make as an adult.
Every morning I wake up with almost limitless options.
Where to go online. What to eat for lunch. What story to write. What broadcast to plan. What book to read. What show to watch. What podcast to listen to. What person to reach out to for connection. What market to analyze.
It goes on and on every day.
Just like a 6 year old looking at all the candy options, I get overwhelmed sometimes.
And just like my 6 year old daughter, I ask for help.
Whether it’s my business partner, Jennings. Or the business owners in one of the masterminds I’m part of. Or my dad. Or my wife. Or even one of my children.
Ok, not really my children.
But when I’m faced with options that threaten to overwhelm me, I reach out for help to make sure I’m not missing information I really need to make the decision.
For my daughter, she asks for help with whether to get the Airheads or the M&Ms.
My decisions are slightly different and more complex than that…
But at its core, the same process.
Evaluate the options, and choose the best course.
Not as many variables in choosing candy as there are in buying apartments, I have found…
Eleanor can decide which candy to choose after having a 5 min conversation with me about what she’s thinking.
Deciding how to proceed making an offer on an apartment complex is more…um…complex.
(YES! Dad joke made it into the writing today!)
Who do you have that you can reach out to when it’s decision time?
If you’re working to get into buying apartments, we can help you build a team to get it done.
If you need help choosing a candybar, I have some experience with that too…
